CARETAKER: TAPU SCHOOL 2026
Hours: 4 ½ hours weekly
Remuneration: Varies based on union membership, IEA, and personal agreement
Responsible to: Principal
Requirements:
Able to pass a police vetting check.
Have access to a trailer which can transport the recycling centre cans, excess rubbish and the school mower.
RESPONSIBITIES:
Ongoing:
Inform the Principal of any ground or building maintenance issues that need attending to – especially those that could affect the Health and Safety or safe running of the school and its staff, students or visitors
Mowing of all lawns, trimming or weed spraying of edges – grounds should always be kept neat and tidy. This includes treating and or spraying paths and decks for moss or lichen build-up to ensure they remain non-slippery particularly during the wetter months
Leaf blow/sweep areas, particularly in front of the office and the pool area as frequently as possible during the swimming season
Maintain the can recycling centre – removing full bags and replacing as required
Minor repairs and maintenance to buildings (non structural repair)
Reporting and attending to any vandal damage
Dispose of excess rubbish as requested
Ensure any tools, machines etc required to enable the safe completion of the caretaker’s job are kept in safe working order or are serviced as required
Clean out gully traps – ensure spouting is clear – THE CARETAKER IS NOT PERMITTED TO CLIMB ONTO ANY ROOF OF ANY SCHOOL BUILDING FOR SAFETY REASONS
Monthly:
Carry out a safety check on all playground structures, - bolts, nails, ropes bark etc. Report any issues to the Principal.
Annually:
At the beginning of the school year check and service the large wind-up sign as required
Padlocks checked and oiled to ensure they are all in working condition
The Caretaker is required to take annual leave breaks during times when the school is not open for instruction, i.e. school holidays. This leave can then be recorded appropriately. Any leave taken outside this time should be discussed with the Principal.
All staff are expected to help maintain a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors by reporting any Health and Safety issues or Hazards to the Principal. A copy of the Tapu School Health and Safety Policy is available on request.
